The Australian Retailers Association (ARA) believe retail is transforming from a stepping-stone industry into a long-term and professionally fulfilling career.
With the diverse range of careers in the retail industry, we know our members need young staff to not only have basic vocational skills but also have a wide range of qualifications before they can start on the job.
This program allows retailers to host a young person aged 17 to 24 as an intern in their business, giving the employer an opportunity to find out if the intern is a good fit for their team and suitable for long-term employment.
These PaTH internships run between 4 and 12 weeks and must offer 30 to 50 hours of work experience per fortnight. Employers who take part of the PaTH program will receive a payment of $1000 to help cover the costs of hosting an intern, and if the retailer decides to employ their intern, they may be eligible for a wage subsidy of up to $10,000.
Interns under the PaTH program are unpaid by the retail employer.Instead, they receive a fortnightly incentive paid by the Australian Government, on top of their income support payment. The intern is also covered by insurance purchased by the Government through the Department of Employment.
The PaTH program internships must be supervised, and can include weekend or shift work (excluding public holidays) if these activities are normal part of the business. The type of work experience an intern can do will vary, depending on their skills and experience, but it should be structured and meaningful.
Given retailers regularly seek new employees through a specialised entry level retail training course, the ARA believe connections to the local and national job active agencies through the PaTH program will provide various opportunities for both retailers and disadvantaged youth seeking employment in the retail industry.
